While not a destination that is top of the list for most visitors to Myanmar, Hpa-an has an incredible amount to offer. In fact, it’s one of our favourite areas to travel to in Myanmar. The town is situated in Karen State, in the South of the country, and is surrounded by lush green paddy fields, cascading rivers and jaw dropping views.
So here are 4 of our top reasons to visit Hpa-an
If exploring caves is your thing, then Hpa-an will have plenty to offer. You could spend the entire day walking through some of these impressive structures, which have been carved out of the limestone rock.
Sadan Cave and Kaw Ka Taung Cave are two of the most visited and you’ll soon realise why when you see them. It’s possible to walk all the way through Sadan Cave, under the mountain, before returning to the entrance in a wooden canoe that drifts along the river.
Kaw Ka Taung Cave is slightly closer to Hpa-an and also offers a natural pool where visitors can relax and cool off. Some of the local restaurants here serve some great Thai food, and it’s even possible to hire a kayak and travel down the river.
The landscape in Hpa-an is simply beautiful. From paddy fields that stretch out in front of you, to rivers that meander into the distance. The views are breath taking, have a look for yourself.
That brings us on to the mountains, and one in particular. Mount Zwekabin looms above Hpa-an, and is viewable from all directions. It takes about 3 hours to climb to the top, passing through clouds and the monastery perched at the summit. It’s well worth the time.
Hpa-an Lodge is worth the visit to Hpa-an all by itself. This beautiful little hotel is located in the shadow of Mount Zwekabin and its 24 rooms all have incredible views that look out onto the valley.
The staff are incredibly friendly, making sure that their guests are well taken care of throughout the day. The breakfast in particular is well worth a mention and the swimming pool is a place you can spend hours on end.
